Application Information

Application Requirements

  1. Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) application with completed dean’s letter.
  2. Three letters of recommendation, which MUST include the following:
    • One emergency medicine standardized letter of evaluation (SLOE)
    • One anesthesia letter of recommendation (anesthesia or ICU rotation acceptable)
  3. Results of United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) Step 1 and Step 2, if available.
    Note: We require that all allopathic, osteopathic and Canadian medical school applicants complete the USMLE Step 1 exam. We do not accept the COMPLEX exam.
  4. Applicants with previous residency experience must submit letters from their previous program director.

Foreign/international medical graduate applications must include:

  1. A copy of your Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certification
  2. Copies of all ECFMG, Foreign Medical Graduate Examination in the Medical Sciences (FMGEMS) and Federation Licensing Examination (FLEX) scores
  3. Letters of recommendation (as above)
    Note: We require that one letter be from an emergency medicine physician from the U.S., but it is suggested that two of your letters come from emergency physicians.
  4. The hospital accepts ONLY J-1 visas.
  5. One year of U.S. clinical experience is required.
  6. No failing scores on Steps 1 and 2 of the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE)

Deadlines and Interview Scheduling

  1. Please try to have your application complete by September 29th, when the dean’s letter is released and ERAS opens.
  2. Interviews will be offered to applicants with completed applications starting the first week after ERAS opens. We will not offer interviews before October 5th except to our own Johns Hopkins students.
  3. Our final application deadline for submitting new applications is October 31st. We receive many competitive applications and encourage applicants to complete their application as soon as possible.
  4. Applicants who are invited to interview receive an email notification from our program.
  5. We encourage our applicants to interview at both the emergency medicine and anesthesia days. Interviews are held on Fridays between Oct 22 and Jan 21 for the emergency medicine program and Mondays and Tuesdays in anesthesia. We recognize that this may not be possible, and can accommodate applicants interviewing with only the emergency medicine program (if they are a primary EM applicant) given the first and final years of our combined program are all emergency medicine.

Interview Day

Emergency Medicine

Your visit to Johns Hopkins will begin on the evening before your interview day, with an applicant reception and dinner with current residents. This dinner is casual and always well-attended. The interview day starts with a program overview by Linda Regan, M.D., M.Ed., program director, followed by the Chairman’s Hour at residency conference, lunch with the residents, a tour of Baltimore and The Johns Hopkins Hospital, and three individual interviews. Your day will end around 4:30 p.m.

Anesthesiology

Each applicant is invited to have dinner with some of our current residents at a restaurant the night before the interview. The dinner is not a required event. The interview day begins at 7:30 a.m. with continental breakfast and ends with a lunch at noon. The department is located in The Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children’s Center building in Baltimore. Continental breakfast will be provided, and the applicants will meet with Jed Wolpaw, M.D., M.Ed., to learn about the program before starting with either interviews or a tour.
