Adult Burn Center surgeons use early surgical interventions to close burn wounds. This technique is recognized as one of the most important factors to improve survival rates of burn injuries. -
Intensivists are physicians with advanced critical care board certification who specialize in treating the most seriously ill or injured patients.
At the Adult Burn Center intensivists closely monitor and manage the daily complexities of a burn injury in critically ill patients.

Burn patients require highly skilled intensive nursing, which includes trauma care, specialized monitoring and extensive wound care. Burn nurses also serve as an advocate for the patient, coordinating care and providing education regarding the patient’s overall plan of care.
Nurses at the Johns Hopkins Burn Center adult unit are dual certified in advanced burn life support and advanced cardiac life support.

Intensive burn wound care is an essential part of treatment and recovery. The Adult Burn Center’s wound care team, which consists of burn technicians and nurses, provides daily burn wound treatment and management. The most up-to-date wound care products are tailored to individual patient needs. -
The psychology team, which consists of faculty psychologists and postdoctoral fellows, provides services to patients during their inpatient stay and follows them through discharge. Common burn-related clinical issues may include delirium, sleep difficulties, pain, acute stress disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, body image dissatisfaction and depression. Psychology services are provided on both an inpatient and outpatient basis in an effort to help patients and their families achieve maximum recovery. Members of the psychology team at the Johns Hopkins Burn Center are nationally recognized as leading clinicians and researchers in burn care and rehabilitation.

Physical and occupational therapists who specialize in burn rehabilitation help burn survivors regain optimal motion, strength and function. All patients are evaluated on admission, treated daily while in the hospital, and followed as outpatients.The burn rehabilitation team facilitates Survivors Offering Assistance in Recovery (SOAR), the Image Enhancement Program and a weekly burn survivor support group. They are also one of the few teams in the country that provide custom-fitted burn masks, which reduce facial scarring.

The social worker and nurse case manager collaborate with the burn team to facilitate the patient’s safe discharge from the Burn Center to another level of care. The social worker can provide crisis counseling to families experiencing stress, anxiety and communication issues. The case manager advocates for the patient and assists with the coordination of care.

Registered dietitians evaluate patients for their complex nutrition requirements. Metabolic studies and replacement of key nutrients is essential to ensure proper nutrition for wound healing and successful recovery.

The Burn Center’s plastic and reconstructive surgery and rehabilitation programs are recognized both nationally and internationally. Burn-related dysfunction and deformities are treated using skin grafts, tissue transfer or reconstructive surgery. The plastic surgeons at the Scar Revision Clinic at Green Spring Station also use a number of techniques to decrease the size and appearance of scarring, including dermabrasion, surgical revision and laser treatment.
Plastic and reconstructive surgery improves a burn survivor’s physical appearance and function, which also increases the patient’s quality of life. The reconstruction program applies the same multidisciplinary approach to patients.

Outpatient Burn Wound Clinic
In the Outpatient Burn Wound Clinic, specialized doctors will check your wounds and provide you with the necessary treatment to promote healing. Prescriptions, medications and dressing orders can be obtained here. You may also be seen by physical and/or occupational therapists to assist with exercise. You will be measured for compression garments, if needed.
The Clinic is located in the Bayview Medical Office (BMO) building, which is marked with the blue awning at its entrance.
