These awards may be used toward books, tuition, and related fees, and both programs require a work commitment to Suburban Hospital after completion of the degree.

Suburban Scholarships are available for current employees pursuing degrees in nursing or an allied health field. The program requires a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Casey Scholarships are available to non-employees pursuing a degree in nursing and to current employees pursuing a degree or certification in a critically-needed area. A minimum 3.0 GPA is required to be eligible for a Casey Scholarship and preference is given to applicants in their last two years of study.

To apply for either of these scholarships, please download and the print the scholarship application.

Fili Herrera

Staff Spotlight

My Way Back Home: Fili Herrera

When Fili Herrera started his nursing career in 2008, he was focused on becoming the best RN he could be. Suburban Hospital gave him that foundation, through our ICU Nurse Residency Program. And, as an Army Veteran, when his passion for caring for our wounded soldiers took him to Walter Reed in 2013. Not quite ready to leave his Suburban Hospital family, Fili kept a position at Suburban.

Eager to learn and grow as an RN, Fili went to Georgetown University and earned his Master’s Degree as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. He started his NP career at the University of Maryland Medical System as a CV-ICU Provider. From there, he transitioned to Thoracic Surgery and Surgical IMC.

Not done exploring all that nursing has to offer, Fili took on a new role in Surgical Oncology. Right away, he knew that this was where his passion for patient care was a perfect fit. And when Suburban Hospital was developing its Surgical Oncology program, Fili jumped at the chance to come home.

Now he works with oncology patients and offers hope through new and cutting-edge treatment modalities.
