Image of the Month: Brain tumors reclassified
Brain tumors are the leading cause of cancer-related death among children. While recent advances have significantly improved the chance of survival for some children with brain tumors, the prognosis for multiple brain tumors remains poor, and the side effects of therapy for tumors like this glioma in a 5y.o. boy, can be substantial and even life-threatening. In 2021, the World Health Organization reclassified brain tumors with a strong emphasis on differences at the molecular level.
Johns Hopkins Children's Center neurosurgeon Alan Cohen has published an article in the New England Journal of Medicine demonstrating how these approaches can offer targeted therapy to improve outcomes and reduce treatment complications.
