The Charcot-Marie-Tooth Center
The Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) Center is a new multidisciplinary clinic at The Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center. CMT disease is an inherited peripheral nerve disorder that is caused by a range of different genetic changes in genes that are important for nerve function. CMT results in nerve damage and most commonly causes changes in sensation, balance, and muscle strength, particularly in the legs and hands. Depending on the genetic variant and other factors, the symptoms can range from mild to severe.
For patients with confirmed or suspected CMT, the Johns Hopkins CMT Center offers a multidisciplinary, comprehensive evaluation and management consultation during which a variety of medical services are provided. Clinic appointments are offered on the first and third Mondays of each month. The clinic is staffed by neurology faculty members who specialize in CMT and other peripheral neuropathies. Other services provided in the CMT Center include access to physical and occupational therapists, orthotists (specializing in bracing and other supportive devices), genetic counselors, and electromyography (EMG) testing.
The Johns Hopkins CMT Center is one of 5 new National Centers of Excellence established by the CMT Association and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. As part of this national consortium, our goal is to enhance the care of patients with CMT and promote research in the field. Patients seen at the Johns Hopkins CMT Center are routinely offered the opportunity to participate in clinical research studies such as the natural history, genetic, and disease biomarker studies conducted by the Inherited Neuropathy Consortium (INC). To find more information about the ongoing studies, please visit the INC research page.
