Pediatric Ophthalmology

A child benifiting from glassesThe Division of Pediatric Ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins has developed a number of centers focused on vision problems ranging from congenital cataract to strabismus.

The primary goal of the ophthalmology specialists and staff of the Zanvyl Krieger Children’s Eye Center at the Wilmer Eye Institute is to provide the most advanced diagnostic consultations and medical and surgical management of children’s eye disorders. Our full-time clinical faculty members understand the special needs of caring for children and their families, and have expertise in a range of areas, from strabismus surgery to pediatric neuro-ophthalmology, retinopathy of prematurity, vision screening and amblyopia treatment.

Our Research

The Wilmer Eye Institute is the largest department of ophthalmology in the United States and is an internationally-recognized research enterprise. Wilmer receives more funding from the National Eye Institute than any other university system, and is a leading recipient of research funding in the nation. The one-week-old baby girl in Michael Repka’s office is proof that eye disease doesn’t discriminate by age. Diagnosed at birth with congenital cataracts, the young patient will likely undergo surgery with general anesthesia at three weeks of age.
