Head and Neck Cancer Surgery

Dr. Eisele is the Andelot Professor and Director of the Johns Hopkins Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and Professor of Oncology at the Johns Hopkins Comprehensive Cancer Center. He specializes in surgery for malignant and benign tumors of the head and neck, with special interest in salivary gland neoplasms and disorders, including sialendoscopy and other minimally invasive approaches, oral cavity cancers, and oropharyngeal cancers.

Dr. Fakhry is a head and neck surgical oncologist at Johns Hopkins and treats the breadth of patients with head and neck cancers, including cancers of the tonsils, base of tongue, mouth, larynx, thyroid, salivary gland (parotid, submandibular gland) and skin cancers among others. Her research interest focuses on the role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in head and neck squamous cell cancer. In addition to the clinical implications of HPV in head and neck cancer, she is co-principal investigator of a large study to understand screening individuals at “high-risk” of malignancy and evaluating imaging modalities to improve diagnostics and early detection of HPV- related head and neck cancer.

Dr. Gourin helps patients with tumors of the skin, oral cavity, larynx, oropharynx, neck, skull base, and salivary glands. She also treats patients with thyroid cancer, premalignant conditions of the upper aerodigestive tract, and unknown primary head and neck primary squamous cell carcinoma, sinus, and nasal cavity tumors. Her research interests focus on head and neck cancer treatment outcomes, function, quality of life, and improving the delivery of high-quality head and neck cancer care.  

Dr. Koch is a leader in head and neck oncologic surgery and has served as President of the American Head and Neck Society, the national organization of head and neck cancer surgeons in the USA. Among Dr. Koch’s landmark publications are studies demonstrating how key molecular events such as p53 mutation and HPV contribute to the development of head and neck cancer. His peer-reviewed publications include 6 articles in the New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Wayne Koch is also involved in humanitarian outreach focused on training surgeons in several African nations.

Dr. London maintains a clinical practice focused on inflammatory sinonasal disease, skull base disorders, and malignancies of the skull base, sinonasal cavity, and oral cavity. This includes chronic rhinosinusitis and rhinitis, skull base defects such as encephalocele or cerebrospinal fluid leak, as well as malignancies including squamous cell carcinoma, olfactory neuroblastoma (esthesioneuroblastoma), and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. He has published over 40 peer-reviewed research articles, reviews, and book chapters. He directs a laboratory at the National Institutes of Health/NIDCD focused on therapeutic advances and mechanisms of olfactory neuroblastoma (esthesioneuroblastoma) tumorigenesis.

Dr. Mydlarz is the director of Johns Hopkins Head and Neck Surgery for the National Capitol Region, as well as an assistant professor in the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery for Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Mydlarz is board certified in otolaryngology by the American Board of Otolaryngology. He specializes in the treatment of benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck, including the upper aerodigestive tract, salivary glands, skull base, thyroid, skin and soft tissue. His research interests include evaluating both surgical and non-surgical treatment outcomes in head and neck cancer patients. He is also interested in the complex molecular biology of head and neck cancer, and potential clinical applications of novel targeted cancer therapies.

Dr. Tan is a head and neck cancer surgeon. She specializes in the treatment of benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck, including the upper aerodigestive tract, salivary glands, thyroid and parathyroid glands, and skin. Her research interests include the molecular mechanisms underlying the development and progression of head and neck cancers.
