Patient Story Scott's Story: Combat Veteran's Complex Microsurgical Facial Reconstructive Surgery

After a bomb blast destroyed the bones of his face and jaw when he was serving in Somalia, Scott had 9 unsuccessful surgeries and was unable to eat solid food for 25 years. Scott consulted with facial and reconstructive surgeon Shaun Desai, M.D. who rebuilt his jaw from Scott's fibula bone using innovative technology with 3D printing and virtual surgical planning.

Johns Hopkins facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon Kofi Boahene answers questions about ethnic facial plastic surgery. He discusses facial scarring, rhinoplasty, jaw contouring and how to choose a facial plastic surgeon.

Dr. Boahene heads the ethnic cosmetic surgery program and is board-certified in both cosmetic surgery and otolaryngology. In particular, reshaping the nose requires sensitivity to individual ethnic features and accepted norms. At our center, we have vast experience working with a variety of patients to achieve their aesthetic rhinoplasty goals.

Transforming Lives Around the World

Since 2007, our center has provided volunteer surgical and support services to patients in underserved areas of the world, transforming lives and ensuring a healthier future. Using technology such as telemedicine to reach remote areas, we envision a future where patients everywhere have access to surgery, speech therapy, and all the expertise they need for the best possible result.

Dr. Desai volunteers annually in Peru as part of the non-profit organization Healing the Children. Accompanied by Johns Hopkins speech therapists, nurses, pediatric anesthesiologists and administrators, he performs facial reconstructive surgery on children with craniofacial diseases, including cleft lip and palate, as well as other congenital deformities such as vascular malformations and trauma. He also led mission trips to Pune, India. Dr. Desai’s work has earned him a humanitarian grant from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
