Volunteering at Sibley Memorial Hospital

COVID-19 Update

All volunteer programs have been suspended until further notice due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

When you use your time and talents in service to others, you make an impact that touches lives, including your own. As a Volunteer at Sibley, you’ll meet new people, make lasting memories, and learn to appreciate all that you have, and all that you have to offer.

Why volunteer at Sibley? The answers vary. Some Volunteers have been patients or have had family members who were patients here. They deeply appreciate the level of care they received, and they want to give back as a way of showing their gratitude. Others simply enjoy taking care of people and making a difference. We also have Volunteers who are interested in pursuing healthcare careers and want to learn more about our environment. If you are friendly, open and caring, you may be an ideal candidate for our Volunteer team.

We have Volunteers of all ages, from high school students through senior-age adults.

You’ll enjoy working in our exceptional atmosphere with caring, supportive team members. You’ll also find that the warmth and gratitude of our patients and staff will enrich your life and fill you with a sense of pride for contributing to the health and wellbeing of others.

Opportunities include (but are not limited to):

  • Administrative Service
  • Animal-Assisted Therapy (in association with Pet Partners)
  • Breast Center
  • Emergency Department
  • Escort Service
  • Gift Cart
  • Medical-Surgical Units
  • Oncology Services
  • Outpatient Services
  • Surgical Reception
  • Women’s and Infants’ Services

Openings may be available in other areas of the hospital; enrollment is based on hospital need.

About Patient Care Observation

COVID-19 Update

Our observation programs have been suspended until further notice due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Individuals and/or staff who have been invited to Sibley Memorial Hospital strictly to observe patient care or hospital operations are permitted to do so under the direct supervision of a sponsor from the hospital. An observation list is generated each week in order to maintain an appropriate number of observers in patient care areas. Before submitting the complete Sibley Memorial Hospital Observer Application Packet, please review the following guidelines:

  • All observers must be at least 18-years-old. Exceptions to this policy may be granted only by the Departmental Chairperson. Anyone under the age of 18-years-old who has been invited to observe must have parent/guardian and Departmental Chairperson approval (signatures on Observer and Sponsor Form) accompanied by a written explanation for the observation submitted by the Sponsor along with the application for consideration of a single day observation. Please contact the Chairperson of the Department of Surgery for this permission.
  • All observers must be sponsored by a Sibley Medical Staff member (observers must obtain and identify their own sponsors).
  • All forms must be submitted to the Volunteer Office as a complete packet at least three (3) business days in advance of the first date of observation (if the first day of observation is on a Monday, the complete packet must be submitted by the previous Wednesday).
  • This packet is valid for only 30 consecutive days. On the Observer and Sponsor Form, you must list each specific date on which you wish to observe; a range of dates (e.g. 11/20/17 – 12/15/17) is not acceptable.
  • No more than two (2) observers per medical staff member per observation.
  • The Volunteer Office will not accept or file individual forms.
  • You must receive a confirmation from the Volunteer Office before you may start.
  • You are required to keep a copy of all documents.
  • The Volunteer Office reserves the right to turn away any applicants not in compliance with regulations.
  • If you are granted permission to observe from the Director of Volunteer Service, you must obtain a temporary ID badge from the Safety and Security Department each day you observe. You must wear your ID badge at all times while at Sibley, and you must return your badge to Safety and Security at the end of each day.
  • Observers are responsible for all expenses they incur at Sibley, including parking and meals.

Please note that observation of surgical procedures is granted on a case-by-case basis, and is subject to approval by the supervising physician, the patient’s attending physician, and the operating room nurse manager or team leader.
