Quality Improvement Tools

  • A3 Report: The A3 Report was developed by Toyota for use in Lean Manufacturing. It is used to display all relevant project information on a single - A3-sized (11 in. x 17 in.) - sheet of paper.  The report is broken down into sections to clearly define the problem, suggest solutions, and record the results.
  • IHI's QI Essentials Toolkit: The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) created a toolkit with all the tools you need to launch and manage a successful quality improvement project. The toolkit includes a short description of each tool, instructions for use, an example, and a blank template. Each of the ten tools can be used with the Model for Improvement, Lean, or Six Sigma. Tools include:

    • Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FEMA) Tool

  • SQUIRE 2.0: The Revised Standards for Quality Improvement Reporting Excellence (SQUIRE 2.0) guidelines were created by a group of national experts to standardize the reporting and critical appraisal of quality improvement projects. PDF | Word

Research Tools

  • EQUATOR Network: The Enhancing the Quality and Transparency Of Health Research (EQUATOR) Network is an international initiative to improve the reliability and value of published health research literature. It provides reporting guidelines for the main research study types.
  • Qualtrics: Qualtrics is the only survey tool approved for use within the Johns Hopkins Health System. All Johns Hopkins Health System employees have access to a free Qualtrics Account. To request an Qualtrics Account, submit a Qualtrics Request Form. Initial accounts have restricted access. In order to upgrade to full access, you are required to complete the JHH Nursing Survey Tools MyLearning module. Upon completing the module, you will receive an upgrade code (within 24 hours) to gain access to an unrestricted Qualtrics account. Click here for more information.
  • REDCap: Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) is a secure web platform for building and managing online databases and surveys for quality improvement and research projects. All Johns Hopkins Health System employees have access to a free REDCap account. To request a REDCap account, submit the REDCap Support Request Form. Click here for more information.
  • SAFE Desktop: The Secure Analytic Framework Environment (SAFE) is a virtual desktop that provides Johns Hopkins Medicine investigators with a secure environment to analyze and share sensitive data with colleagues. All Johns Hopkins Health System employees have access to a free basic SAFE Desktop. To request a SAFE Desktop, submit the SAFE Desktop Request Form. Once granted access, you can log in to your SAFE Desktop using the application in your Hopkins MyCloud. Click here for more information.
  • SlicerDicer: SlicerDicer is a tool embedded in Epic to help clinicians explore a patient cohort. Using Slicer Dicer, clinicians can find the data they need to investigate a hunch, and then refine or reformulate their searches on the fly to better understand their patient populations. With access to all the clinical data documented in the chart, clinicians are also able to examine trends in their patients. Slicer Dicer can often provide rough counts on the number of patients who meet simple inclusion and exclusion criteria based on demographics, diagnoses, and lab data from Epic. All Johns Hopkins Health System employees with an Epic account have access to SlicerDicer. Click here for more information. 
  • TriNetX: TriNetX is a data exploration tool to help researchers explore a patient cohort. TriNetX is populated with data from Epic, which has been de-identified, cleaned, and curated. Some investigators may already be using SlicerDicer to explore patient cohorts. While similar in concept, TriNetX and SlicerDicer have different strengths and weaknesses. All Johns Hopkins Health System employees have access to a free TriNetX account. To request a TriNetX account, complete  the TriNetX Request Form and send to Diana Gumas at [email protected]. Dissemination Tools

  • INANE:  The International Academy of Nursing Editors (INANE) is an international collaborative of nursing editors and publishers focused on meeting the practice, research and education needs of the nursing profession. It provides a free, online Directory of Nursing Journals to help nurses find reputable nursing journals.
  • JANE: The Journal/Author Name Estimator (JANE) is a free online journal selection tool. It allows users to input keywords, abstract text, or author names to find related journals, authors or articles.
