Background

Dr. Hayes specializes in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and related neuromuscular disorders and conducts translational research on ALS/FTD pathogenesis and treatment.

She received her M.D. and Ph.D. from Emory University in Atlanta. She then completed neurology residency and neuromuscular fellowship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital before joining the neurology faculty in 2016.

Dr. Hayes' laboratory studies RNA-protein trafficking and disruption in neurodegeneration. The major focus of the laboratory is how nucleocytoplasmic transport and RNA processing intersect to regulate the localization and function of RNA binding proteins such as TDP-43. Using that knowledge, Dr. Hayes and colleagues are working to develop novel therapies for ALS/FTD.
