Supporting the Health and Well-Being of JHM Faculty and Staff

For more than a year, across our health system, our employees have experienced many different stressors. If you, or someone you care about needs support, Johns Hopkins has a host of resources to help. We invite you to learn about the support resources available to you and to reach out to when you need help.

We believe we have a duty to care and support each other by:

  • Being aware of the risks for distress and what to look out for
  • Being willing to connect with each other in a meaningful way
  • Being informed about how to help people get the support they need

Resilience in Stressful Events (RISE)

The Resilience in Stressful Events team provides confidential peer-to-peer support for health system employees who have experienced a stressful, patient-related incident.

Johns Hopkins Employee Assistance Program

JHEAP is a free confidential counseling and support program available 24/7 for Johns Hopkins staff and household family members.

Chaplains at JHM

Chaplains at Johns Hopkins Medicine support staff, as well as patients and families. Chaplains are available 365 days, 24/7, either in person, phone or virtual.

Healthy at Hopkins

Healthy at Hopkins covers a spectrum of healthy lifestyle strategies available for individuals and teams.

  • The program’s new vendor, CCA, provides 24/7 access to free counseling and referral services for Johns Hopkins Medicine and Johns Hopkins University employees and their household family members.

    Confidential services and resources include:

    • Emotional support to help manage stress (at work or home), emotional distress, a difficult life transition or other challenges
    • Referrals for child care and elder care, pet care and household services
    • Consultations for legal and financial services

  • Provides assessment and management of mental illnesses like major depressive disorder, panic disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder for faculty and staff working at JHH and Bayview. Providing stress management mindfulness meditation sessions available to all JHM staff on Zoom.

    Johns Hopkins Medicine Adolescent Depression Awareness Program (ADAP) educates high school students, their parents, and their teachers about the illness of depression. We aim to increase awareness and decrease stigma about mood disorders in young people to help them get the treatment they need. In this series of one minute videos, Dr. Karen Swartz and colleagues from the JHM Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences speak to parents, caregivers and friends about how to recognize symptoms of depression in teens.

    How to Deal with Coronavirus Burnout and Pandemic Fatigue                            Psychologist Carisa Parrish provides tips you can use to keep up these effective practices, avoid coronavirus “safety fatigue” or “burnout,” and protect yourself, your family and others from COVID-19.

  • The branded employee health and well-being program for JHHS employees. Resources and programs cover the spectrum of healthy lifestyle strategies, such as sleep, meditation and relaxation techniques and are available for individuals and teams.   • The Johns Hopkins Lactation Support Program helps make the transition back to work or study easier so you can express milk for as long as it is the best choice for you and the beneficiaries of your milk.

  • Contacting 988 provides a direct connection for anyone needing support for mental health or substance use (problems with drugs and alcohol), having thoughts of suicide, or being worried about someone who may need crisis support. 

  • The National Domestic Violence Hotline, at 800-799-7233 (SAFE), can provide information and advice. Free, confidential help 24/7.

There are resources available to all Johns Hopkins staff to support mental, emotional and spiritual health and well-being. But not all staff know about the resources. You can help spread the word by sharing this information at team huddles and meetings, posting in break rooms, and by sharing with staff during wellness rounds.

Helping Each Other Through Times of Stress

Many of us have faced challenges that are stressful and overwhelming, and we may have feelings of isolation, anxiety, hopelessness and depression. These feelings of stress can affect our work and home lives. This resource will help in identifying signs of stress in our colleagues as well as in ourselves, find ways in which we can connect with each other in meaningful ways and learn where to get support.

    A free, peer-to-peer program for physicians and others working in health care designed to provide support, connection, and encouragement. Sign up for weekly nudges and prompts for 90 second buddy “check ins”. Learn how to find your buddy and get started.

  • Silvercloud

All Johns Hopkins staff have free access to the Calm app with guided meditation, bedtime stories, soothing music and relaxation tools.

Instructions: New users will need to create an account at calm.com/jhu and follow these steps:
