Nurse Residency Program for Newly Licensed RNs

Howard County General Hospital

You made it through nursing school. You passed your NCLEX. Now what?

Start your registered nursing career at Howard County General Hospital!

HCGH began offering a transition to nursing practice program in 2005, and ever since then the program has continued to grow and develop alongside the nursing research. In 2017 we partnered with the Vizient/AACN Nurse Residency Program (NRP) to guide new graduate nurses during their first year of practice to become leaders at the bedside.

Located in beautiful Columbia, Maryland, HCGH combines the convenience of a full range of hospital and wellness services with award-winning clinical excellence and membership in the world-renowned Johns Hopkins Health System.

Our Nurse Residency Program

Our NRP has achieved ANCC Practice Transition Accreditation Program designation with Distinction.

The 12-month program is composed of two parts:
  • Clinical orientation: Our unit orientation pathways ease the transition from recent student to practicing nurse. New nurses develop clinical skills during a tiered transition to independent practice.
  • Professional development coaching: During the first year, nurse residents attend monthly seminars designed to grow them into clinical leaders. Seminar topics are planned to complement clinical learning and practice needs.
HCGH starts 3 NRP Cohorts per year in two waves: Spring Cohort (starts February/March), Summer Cohort (starts July/August), and Fall Cohort (starts September/October). Our NRP leaders actively participate in the Maryland Nurse Residency Collaborative, a partnership with other Maryland acute care hospitals focused on promoting best evidence on transition to nursing practice.
