Scholarships change lives. Whether you've received a scholarship, created one or both.
It was a condition of Johns Hopkins' bequest that such support be provided for students "most deserving of choice because of their character and promise." The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, its alumni and its friends remain committed to this same tradition of philanthropic support for its current student body over 100 years after Mr. Hopkins made such provisions in his will. Scholarships play a crucial role in attracting the exceptional students that continue to make this a top-rated medical school. From the day the Johns Hopkins University enrolled its first class in 1876, scholarships have been provided to excellent students who otherwise might not have the means to attend.
The Scholarship Recognition Event brings together School of Medicine scholarship donors and scholarship recipients. Students have a chance to say a personal and heartfelt "Thank you," and donors have a chance to see the impact on the lives their investment makes. Personal stories abound, connections are made, and lasting friendships are created.
2022
On March 28, donors representing over 50 scholarships “traveled” from 17 states to attend the virtual celebration. The Douglas G. Carroll, Jr. Student Aid Fund was the featured scholarship. Established in 1976 by Douglas Carroll, Med ’42, the fund has grown over the years through his estate and gifts from his family. The formal program includes conversations with his daughter, Susan Carroll Immelt, and Carroll Scholars, as well as a special segment with Brian T. Garibaldi, M.D., Med ’04, the Douglas Carroll, M.D., Scholar Johns Hopkins Center for Innovative Medicine.
Following residency training in medicine at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Carroll established Baltimore City Hospitals' department of rehabilitation medicine and became the acting chief of physical medicine and rehabilitation at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He spent much of his career developing strong clinical programs between the two institutions. In 1960, he was promoted to associate professor of medicine and physician in charge of physical medicine at the outpatient department of The Johns Hopkins Hospital.
