About Johns Hopkins Medicine

The Johns Hopkins SOURCE, a community engagement and service-learning center, established an HIV Counseling and Testing Program that partners with community clinics and trains Johns Hopkins students to conduct testing and counseling.

JHOME provides long-term primary care for patients who cannot get into a clinic because of their chronic conditions. Through JHOME, physicians and other health care professionals treat patients where they live, so that restricted mobility does not disrupt access to medical care.

Five events and 1,201 lunches later, the Bunches of Lunches project is still going strong. The shelters greatly appreciated our efforts, and everyone involved had a great time supporting a good cause.

Scotti formed a Johns Hopkins Medicine cycling team, Fierce Chicks Rock, to participate in Moveable Feast’s Ride for the Feast fundraiser. Thousands of miles and two decades later, Fierce Chicks Rock has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the organization.

“Medical school is a very intense time,” says Rosemary Riel, SOURCE’s assistant director for academic service-learning. “The Service Scholars program is an opportunity for the students to develop a different lens on the communities they’ll be working with. It humanizes the practice of medicine beyond the traditional clinic focus.”

The Johns Hopkins Office of Government and Community Affairs and its community partners are distributing 18,000 boxes of produce donated by Baltimore City and 3,300 COVID-19 home test kits from The Johns Hopkins University. They are also distributing 5,000 face masks and 5,000 bottles of hand sanitizer donated by The Johns Hopkins Hospital warehouse and the Johns Hopkins University Office of Economic Development.

Members of the East Baltimore community attended the sixth annual East Baltimore Community Conversation to help foster open dialogue between Johns Hopkins Medicine and its neighbors. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Jan. 12 meeting was held via Zoom.

Johns Hopkins Medicine and Sibley Memorial Hospital have supported innovative teams through the Ward Infinity. Last year was the first time the program included a pitch-and-storytelling competition that offered additional funding opportunities.

In December, the diagnostic medical sonography students at The Johns Hopkins Hospital chose to package meals for Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland. The group assembled 2,000 meals over a four-hour shift.

Through compassionate patient care, advocacy, teaching and scholarship, Johns Hopkins urban health residents receive world class clinical training that integrates them in the Baltimore community. 

When Suburban Hospital received the go-ahead from Maryland and Montgomery County officials that it could serve as a vaccine clinic site for the community, the team sprang into action. In less than 48 hours, the hospital had set up a full clinic to vaccinate as many as 400 people per day, with room for physical distancing and all safety protocols.
